WHAT TO WEAR ON NEW YEAR’S EVE

HUISHAN ZHANG DRESS (SIMILAR HERE)

While you certainly never need an excuse to wear all the sequins and shine your heart desires, December 31 is the prime day for it. New Year’s Eve is a celebration, after all,  and your outfit should be one that captures that excitement.

So, what to wear? That depends on what you have on the night’s agenda. A black-tie ball? Cocktails at a club? Cozy Italian dinner at home with your favorite friends? No matter what you have planned, the guide below covers it all.

BLACK-TIE BALL

If you’re headed to a black-tie event (I love a NYE wedding!), a long gown with some shine should do the trick. This long-sleeve sequin dress is a great option that requires minimal accessorizing other than a pair of long earrings. I also love this black v-neck number. The structured shoulders and velvet give it that after-dark drama that’s perfect for NYE. In the mood for color? There’s plenty of that – see: here, here, and here.

COCKTAIL PARTY

Cocktail o’clock gives you all kinds of options. You could opt for sequins in the form of a midi like this one from A.L.C or, for a less expensive option,  this Banana Republic (!) dress would do the trick. I also could not be more in love with this satin mini. It’s the epitome of a perfect LBD and, with the right accessories, would be so chic for a New Year’s celebration. If you’re not in the mood for a dress then how about a jumpsuit? I, for one, love a chic jumpsuit and relish the occasion to wear one. This one (on sale!) is straightforward, giving you year-round wearability. All you need is some great jewelry or a sparkly clutch to give it a New Year’s spin. I also love this one-shoulder style, in a perfect shade of winter white.

DINNER AT HOME

Staying in on NYE is my favorite way to celebrate the holiday. I love to host friends for a late-night, wine-filled pasta dinner. The attire for that kind of night is anything goes – but make it festive! A pair of party pants like these or these would most certainly do the trick. Top either one with a simple black knit (my favorite black bodysuit would be ideal) and a pair of sky-high pumps. For something a little more dialed down but no less festive, add a super sparkly top to a pair of denim or your favorite black pants. Look no further than here, here, and here.

P.S. If pajamas are the dress code of choice then order these along with a pair of slippers and call it a night.

ACCESSORIZE YOURSELF

The quickest ticket to make any look feel festive is the right accessories. High-shine extras instantly add festive flair to even the most pared back ensemble. The first thing that comes to mind is a pair of super sparkly earrings like this on-sale pair from Alessandra Rich. You could also just go for the obvious – and less expensive! – and wear these under-$50 martini earrings. Festive accessories could also come in the form of footwear like any of the sparkly styles from Amina Muaddi or these feathered strappy sandals. For the finishing touch, a statement-making handbag is the ultimate party trick – see: here, here, and here.
