If I had to make a list of can’t-live-without-it items in my closet, a well-tailored jacket would definitely top off the list. With the exception of denim (current favorites: these, these, and these), there is perhaps no item more versatile than a fitted jacket. It works with everything – from the most casual pair of jeans to a cocktail dress!, and it has day-to-night capability so you can wear it from your desk to dinner. One of the best things about a jacket is its ability to totally transform an outfit. In other words, it’s a fast fix when you need to dress up a look. For example, last week I was wearing these jeans with a t-shirt (obsessed with this style from ATM) and my sneakers. When it came time to head to my afternoon meeting, rather than change my entire outfit, I simply switched into a pair of pumps and topped off the look with this jacket. Done! I went from super-duper casual to pulled-together in less than twenty seconds. It’s qualities like that that make a jacket an item that every well-dressed woman should have in her closet.
With that in mind, I’ve pulled together a few of my favorites for you. Starting with the most classic of all: the black blazer. If you don’t already have one, this is the one to buy. I love this one from Veronica Beard. I actually love any jacket from Veronica Beard. They make some of the best – the fit, the length, and that additional layer option, all of it is on point! (Be sure to check out this white one. I love it!) For something a little less refined, check out this one from IRO. The tweed is very Chanel-esque, and the fringe gives it a more relaxed feel. Just as classic as black, a navy blazer is a must-have. I love this one. (Smythe’s green blazer is also worth a look. Love those elbow patches!) With spring right around the corner, a white blazer is key. You can go bright white like this one or go for a creamy shade like this one. I’m also totally in love with this soft-pink one from Carven. I’m thinking about ordering it for myself. If you’re after something in a print, check out this one from Philip Lim. I saw it the other day in a store and it’s even better in person. The print is bold but surprisingly versatile. It would add just the right amount of punch to even something as simple as a white tee and jeans.
