VERONICA BEARD Jacket // JAMES PERSE T-Shirt // Jeans // CHANEL Nail Polish in “Espadrilles”

There are certain items in my closet that I classify as a “smart spend.” A “smart spend” for me is an item that isn’t exactly budget-friendly, but is so versatile/wearable that it justifies the cost. I’m talking about things like my very favorite button-down shirt, a classic camel coat, and the best, carry-with-everything tote. They aren’t flashes in the pan. They aren’t trend-driven impulse purchases. They’re the kinds of things so classic that you can’t put a date on them. They’re smart spends.

One item on my own list of smart spends is my Veronica Beard blazer. A tailored black (and/or navy) blazer is a closet essential and a key piece for uniform dressing. This VB one is a total gem: perfectly-tailored, feminine, and classic. Those qualities alone make it a winner but – wait – it gets better. The VB designers took it a step further and added hidden inner zippers that let you zip in a dickey. In a nutshell: you get the layered look without any of the added bulk. (The best ideas are usually the most simple, no?)

The best part is the myriad of dickey options from which you can choose. (No surprise: Nordstrom has such a good selection.)  It’s all about the look you want. When I’m after something casual, I add my gray hoodie. It puts a sporty spin on the polished blazer. If I’m in the mood for stripes (always), I’ll add my this knit style. On the days that I need something a little more polished, that’s when I’ll zip in the “Upstate” dickey. (It comes in several colors but the ivory is my all-time favorite.) That kind of versatility makes this a very smart spend – not to mention, the ultimate travel companion!
