LISTEN TO THIS PODCAST…I wish I could remember who first told me about NPR’s “How I Built This” podcast. I owe them a big thank you for what has easily become one of my very favorite things. Hosted by Guy Raz, this podcast is all about how some of the most well-known brands (from Spanx to Southwest Airlines) came to be. Each 30-minute episode is essentially a conversation between Raz and a different entrepreneur in which he or she tells the story behind their brand. Not only is it educational and super interesting, but it’s also incredibly inspiring. Each episode leaves me feeling so motivated. I have yet to find one person that doesn’t love this podcast. Give it a try and see for yourself.
RED, WHITE AND BLUE… I love nothing more than a good theme, and Fourth of July provides the perfect one: America. The red, white, and blue selection is so good this year! I’m currently eyeing this swimsuit (this one is cute too), this one-shoulder top (under $100!), and this dress. Happy Birthday, USA! (P.S. Check back next week for a packing list with all of my red, white, and blue favorites!)
I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM… While there’s plenty of really amazing ice cream flavors you can buy at the grocery store, there’s still nothing quite like the homemade variety. Am I right? This summer, I’m taking ice-cream making on as a new hobby. (This sounds like a really good excuse to finally buy myself a few of these, yes?) I recently invested in this ice cream maker and have to say that it’s kind of amazing. It’s so easy to use and doesn’t require any pre-frozen bowls. So far I’ve gotten all of my recipes out of this book (I highly recommend it!), but this weekend, I’m planning to test out a couple of new ones (this one) that I found on Pinterest. Any and all tips/recipes are welcome!
THE DEVIL WEARS ZARA… Scoring something really, really good at Zara is such a good feeling. It makes you want to tell everyone you know about your good fortune. Well, these two girls have basically channeled that feeling and turned it into an Instagram account in which they document their best Zara finds. It’s a great way to make sure you don’t miss out on any Zara wins. Follow along.
DONNI CHARM… I’ve long been a fan of Donni Charm’s large cotton scarves (they’re a must-have for travel), but it wasn’t until recently that I became obsessed with the brand’s mini-scarves. Not only do they come in the cutest prints and colors (I love the gingham!), but they’re endlessly versatile. I’ve mostly been wearing mine tied in my hair, but it’s just as cute tied around the neck or attached to the strap of a tote. You can bet I’ll be wearing this one on Fourth of July.
THE TV I’M (NOT) WATCHING… I’m in a TV-show slump. With the exception of Pretty Little Liars (I really have no idea how I got sucked into such a truly crazy and ridiculous show but it’s too late to turn back now. #inittowinit) and the occasional episode of The Bachelorette, I really don’t have a good TV show to watch right now. (There’s also Nashville, but I hope we can all agree that the show has gone completely downhill this season. Don’t even get me started.) Any suggestions?
DOCU-CRAZY…The good news about the above TV-show slump is that I’m currently entertaining myself by watching a lot of documentaries. From true-crime stories to fashion documentaries, I’ve been watching one right after the other. I’ve managed to make my way through quite a list, including Amanda Knox (really interesting but ultimately left me feeling even more confused about the whole thing), Inside Job, Dior and I (so, so good!), OJ: Made in America. Next up: this one. Again, any suggestions are welcome.
HEADACHE RELIEF… While on vacation in Napa last month, there was one day where I had this headache that just would not go away. (I blame the vino.) It happened to be the day of my facial at the hotel’s spa (best spa I’ve ever been to, by the way). When I mentioned the headache to the aesthetician, she told me she was going to apply peppermint oil to ease the pain. Any skepticism I may have had about the effectiveness of this disappeared just as quickly as my headache did. It really worked. I left there headache-free and fully committed to learning more about essential oils.
SALE WORTH SEEING… There are way too many good sales happening right now, but the one with which I’ve had the most luck lately is this one. I’ve managed to score some really great items that are perfect for right now (this), but I’ve also scooped up lots of items like this navy leather jacket and this peplum sweater that will work for fall as well.
I LOVE THIS APP… The other day someone asked me which app I use the most. Instagram obviously tops the list but right after that would be Pocket. This app is a lifesaver for me. I’m constantly coming across articles online that I want to read but don’t have the time to do so at that very moment. This habit used to mean a bunch of open tabs in my web browser and a mile-long list of bookmarks. And then I found Pocket. It’s a browser extension that lets you “pocket” an article (or a video, a picture, whatever!) for later viewing. The best part is that you don’t have to be online to read it later. It syncs up across all of my devices so no matter where I am (walking on the treadmill, waiting in the doctor’s office), I always have a stash of reading material with me.
