It’s official: gift guides are here. I’m kicking it off with the one that is most timely: what to buy for your hosts and hostesses. My advice: skip the scented candle. (That is, unless you’re coming over to my house. If I’m the one who’s hosting, feel free to bring me one of these. I’m obsessed.) Instead, opt for something a little more unique. Need some ideas? I always think a gift for the host’s home is a good idea. I usually go for something they can use to entertain at future parties. For example, a great set of cocktail napkins (you can personalize these), cheese knives, or a set of glasses for the bar. I also love to show up with a great book. This year, I’m giving Assouline’s Cocktail Chameleon to several hosts. It’s such a fun book. The drink recipes are delicious and the photography is really gorgeous. Another fun idea is a game. I always find this to be a crowd-pleaser. I love these personalized decks of cards or, for something a little more over-the-top, these dominoes are fab. Lastly, when in doubt, show up with a delicious treat. Think about something they can enjoy the morning after the party like homemade biscuits and jam or artisan coffee. If you go the dessert route instead, consider Vosge’s hot chocolate. Not only is it absolutely delicious (truly!), but the packaging is really pretty which makes it like a ready-made gift. Just tie a ribbon around it and you’re good to go.
