What I pack in my suit case is, of course, always dependent on the destination. With that said, there is a handful of items that, no matter where I’m headed, will always be in my bag. These are the types of things that I consider wardrobe building blocks – versatile and easily mixed and matched with lots of different looks. Making a habit of always having these things with me when I travel has made packing so much easier – not to mention, tamed my tendency to overpack!
1. Black Blazer
A tailored blazer is the finishing touch to any look – jeans, skirts, little dresses. I never travel without my black (or navy) blazer. The key is to find one that fits perfectly. My go-to of late has been Veronica Beard. They’re cut just right and feel great on. The best part? They’re made in such a way that you can button any one of their dickeys inside. Example: this dickey snaps right into any of their signature blazers. It basically creates that layered look without any of the bulk. Kind of genius, right?
2. Striped Tee
Do we even need to discuss this one? I’m fairly certain you all are aware about my love for the classic t-shirt. I think Kule makes some of the best ones. They fit just right and – this is important – they can handle the wash. In other words: they’ll last you a long time. I also love the long-sleeve styles from Comme des Garçons. They’re equally as classic but just a touch more playful.
3. Go-with-everything heels
Unless I’m headed to Harbour Island (sandals only there!), I always have one pair of go-with-everything heels in my bag. They’ll dress up a pair of jeans and look right at home with a little dress. If you’re looking to splurge, go for a pair of Chanel slingbacks or black pumps from Jimmy Choo. On the less pricey side, these or these are a great option.
4. Go-with-everything flats
I love ballet flats in fun prints and bright colors, but when I travel I opt for something more neutral – and for me, leopard is a neutral. I love that you can wear these (under $125!) with jeans or pair them with an LBD.
5. Chic sneakers
Comfort is key when traveling so I’m always in sneakers when I’m on the plane. My white Supergas are a longtime favorite, but I also love the options from Golden Goose. They looks just as good with something dressy (these black pants, for example) as they do a pair of distressed jeans.
6. One dress (not black)
You never know where a trip may lead so having at least one dress is always a good idea. Most people would argue that the LBD is the best choice, but I prefer to go with something in a print or a cool texture. It requires less effort on my part because I won’t need a lot of accessories to make it sing. Something like this shirt dress is perfect. It’s so versatile! It can go dressy with the right pair of heels or super casual with some slides.
