Tastemaker: Kimberly Schlegel Whitman

We’re constantly inspired by so many people around us. Whether it’s a jewelry designer, event planner or an up-and-coming artist, these individuals spark our creativity and we want you to know about them! That’s why we’ve decided to include “Tastemakers,” a new feature here on Luella and June in which we’ll share these fabulous people, places and things with you!

I can’t think of a better person to begin this series with than Kimberly Schlegel Whitman. An entrepreneur from the beginning, Kimberly began her career by launching her own event planning company, RSVP Soiree Luxury Event Rentals, while planning her own Idlewild Debutante Ball. The lifestyle expert is currently the owner and operator of RSVP Social Calendar, an online social calendar keeping everyone in the know on the latest charitable events in the metroplex. Kimberly’s passion for entertaining has led her to author 4 books (check them all out right here). Whether planning a féte for thousands or a birthday party for your dog, Kimberly tells you how to make it happen in these fabulous tabletop tomes. You can also get your entertaining fix when you listen to Kimberly on her daily lifestyle segments on 103.7 Lite FM. Even after all of this, Kimberly still manages to donate her time to numerous charities around the metroplex and be the mother to an adorable son, JR.
With the beginning of fall drawing near (Happy Labor Day!) I thought you all might want to know how Kimberly spent her fabulous summer vacation. And since she’s certainly one of the chicest people I know, I’m always curious to find out her must-haves – read below to find out her favorites!

Where did you spend your summer? Any vacations?

We spent as much of June as possible in Paris so that JR can be close to his Grand-mere “MiMi” (Justin’s mother Caroline). She lives there and Justin has spent much of his life there so it is important to us that JR has a lot of time there too! This year, we took a little excursion from Paris to Forte dei Marmi, Italy. Forte dei Marmi is famous for it’s Wednesday morning market and I now know why. The cashmere, leather and linens were amazing and the prices were fantastic too! We spend the rest of the summer at our beach cottage in Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada. It is on Lake Huron and has the most beautiful sunsets in the world. We absolutely love it here because it is so quiet, so easy, and so casual. I grew up here and my family has been coming here for generations. My great grandfather (my father’s grandfather) had a cottage here and so did my grandfather. My aunts, uncles, and cousins summer here too! The town has a population of 1,000 and I think I might be related to half of them!

Must-haves? Favorites?

Cover-Up? Caftans. This year I snatched a few of the ones that Jackie Bolin brought back from her trip to Morocco (to celebrate Capera Ryan’s Birthday). She had them at VOD and I ran in to make my claim!
iPhone or Blackberry? iPhone.
Scarf? I always bring lots of big pashmina style scarves to Grand Bend with me because it cools off the evenings.
Hair product? Anything by Paul Mitchell….My future brother in law, Troy Kloewer, works there and he is always giving us tips on the proper shampoos and styling products. I love it!
Sunglasses? Chanel or Gucci fit my big head but I also grabbed a pair for $16 at the drug store counter and I am getting tons of complements on them. Everyone asks if they are Chloe.
Lip balm? Cherry Ice
Flip flops? Jack Rogers
Playlist? I rely on my husband, Justin, for that one but I will say that he is often being asked by friends to make a playlist for them. My husband is great with music though so he always has his iPod playing in the house. He is always finding fun, new songs to fit the mood. I think he secretly wants to be a DJ.
Sunscreen? Always Natura Bisse. They have a new one this year that is fantastic! I have it slathered on right now!
Book? I love my Kindle and my iPad books. I just finished The Help by Kathryn Stockett and it is really one of my favorite books ever! I could not put The Poisonwood Bible down a few years ago so I put it back into my line up for this summer. I am in the middle of The Duchess of Windsor by Charles Higham. I love biographies! I also have Have a New Husband by Friday in the pile. The author, Dr. Kevin Leman, was a guest on our radio show and I couldn’t wait to read the book. He is hilarious! A girlfriend gave me Stolen Lives by Malika Oufkir because my in-laws are mentioned in it. I can’t wait to read that too!
Magazines? Vanity Fair, Town & Country, Marie Clair, Elle, Vogue and every single shelter magazine I can get my hands on. Canada has some great shelter magazines: Style at Home and Canadian House and Home.
