DOWN TO THE BASICS

In order to get through this summer-to-fall transition period, I rely on the basics: my favorite tee (that just gets better after every wash), a pair of boyfriend jeans, and a tailored blazer. These are all perfect examples of the items that make up the foundation of my wardrobe and will remain on heavy rotation this season. There are two keys to making pieces work over and over. First, everyone should own a black-and-white basic. There isn’t a color combination more classic and it works with everything. This jacket (and this one, too) is spot on. Secondly, it’s those added details that provide a piece with more visual interest. In this case, it’s the leather lapels on this blazer. The leather trim gives this jacket just a little something extra – a touch of edge to a classic piece. It dresses up my t-shirt and jeans look, and it will also work as a finishing touch over a cocktail dress. A little leather goes a long way, doesn’t it?

FLOAT ON: CHRISTIAN HAUB’S ART

christian haub art

I just came across Christian Haub’s newest installations and had to share them. I absolutely adore these. What I would do to have one of these hanging in my house… Made of suspended acrylic glass and colored rays, the installations easily refract light. They really do appear to be floating off of the wall (hence why Haub refers to these as “Floats”). I love the geometry of these – and, of course, the color! They remind me of my favorite trays from Alexandra Von Furstenberg. The “Floats” are currently on view at the Miller Yezerski Gallery in Boston. Worth a trip? I think so.

SALE ALERT: SHOPBOP

shopbop sale Just in time to top off the summer season, Shopbop is giving us another chance at their sale. They’ve added so. many. new. things. First up: there’s the earrings. This pair and this pair. I’ve had those in my “hearts” section for awhile now and it’s about time to add both (!) to my cart. And then there’s Lemlem. You all know how much I love that brand. My favorite scarf is marked down (should I get another color?) and this coverup, too. Did I mention that every. single. K. Jacques sandal is marked down? Every single one. They don’t just have summer stuff though. There’s plenty of things that will carry you right into fall. Take this amazing Rag & Bone leather shirt, for example. Or this yummy cashmere sweater. Whatever you’re looking for, they’ve got it.

GEOMETRICS

It’s no secret that I love denim – and the vast assortment of different washes, colors, and cuts (skinny, high-waist, straight leg) in my closet stand to prove it, too. What I don’t have a lot of in terms of denim, however, is prints. For some reason, I’ve refrained from purchasing too many printed denim styles. I think I initially felt like this was just a trend – one that I’d grow tired of too quickly to warrant a purchase. Leave it to J.Crew (and a morning run-in with Sally who was sporting these while grabbing coffee)  to change my mind. The geometric print is bold (as opposed to some of the ditzy florals I’ve seen too much of lately) and manages to pair perfectly with so many things – including an additional print like this one on top. These jeans have worked their way into quite a few looks as of late, and the good news is that I won’t have to retire them anytime soon. They’ll pair just fine with my cozy sweaters and my new leather jacket this fall.

P.S. Since we’re on the topic of J.Crew today, be sure to check out their major denim sale that’s happening right now. Its 25% off all denim! This is the pair I’ll be adding to my cart today.

Where did the time go? This is it. This weekend marks the (un)official end of summer. Once Labor Day is over, everyone really starts gearing up for fall. Labor Day is also the last three-day-weekend of the year. (There’s Columbus Day. But who gets Columbus Day off?) Bummer.

In the meantime, however, we can still relish our last days of warm weather, white jeans, and sun-filled days. I’m hoping that some of you will doing said things out of town somewhere. The mountains? The beach? I’ll be soaking up the holiday weekend in the city – Nashville, to be exact. A little random, I know. I’ve only spent a total of 24 hours there when I was visiting colleges. I figured it’s time to go back. My husband and I have been talking about visiting the Music City for awhile now, and this weekend seemed like the perfect time to do it. (This visit may or may not have something to do with my growing obsession with the TV show. Anyone else?) I probably won’t be packing my swimsuit and coverup (for those of you headed to the beach – lucky you!), but I am planning to bring along my new Saloni dress for a night out and these polka-dot pajamas for breakfast in bed. Wherever you’re headed, I hope it’s a good one!

A PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS?

tumblr_mqawhzgZPE1qzjbl4o1_1280

I’m skipping over my usual weekend + links post (if you are looking for something to peruse, have fun scrolling through these) today in exchange for something a little different. Instead of my usual chitter-chatter, I actually want to hear from you.

The return of the fall season is always a good time for me to take stock of things – goals, to-do lists, my closet. It’s the whole back-to-school feeling. New year, fresh start. This is when I like to evaluate where I am with things; congratulate myself on things that I’m doing right, and remind myself of the things I can improve on.

One of those things I need to evaluate is this blog. This is where I need your help.  I have my own ideas in mind for it, but what I really want is to hear from YOU. I want to know your thoughts on Luella & June. I would be ever so grateful if you would tell me your thoughts on the blog. What do you love about it? What do you not like about it? Are there certain posts you can’t stand? (Tell me the truth!) Are there others that you wish I did more of? Is there a topic that I never cover that you wish I did? Is there something I talk about way too much?

You can be as specific or as general as you like. Please just be honest. Constructive criticism is a good thing for me, and it’s only going to make this blog better. So, let’s hear it!

NEW DENIM

RAY-BAN Sunglasses // OLD NAVY Denim Vest // KATE SPADE SATURDAY Dress // SWEET & SPARK Vintage Cuff // DRIES VAN NOTEN Sandals // CELINÉ Bag

I’ve told you all before how much I love my denim jacket. It’s one of my very favorite things in my closet – and since I’ve had it since my 11th birthday, it’s one of my oldest, too! I find that it works with any look, dressy or not. The only problem is that it’s really not conducive to the hotter-than-hot temperatures. No matter how many rolls up the sleeve I do, it’s still just a little too heavy. Solution? A denim vest. I can’t believe I’ve waited this long to add one to my closet. I love the wash of this one, too. Just light enough – but too light. It’s one of those perfectly perfect transitional pieces that works in warm weather but is also going to carry me right into fall. A true in-between seasons kind of piece. Plus it adds an extra element that makes this dress that I’ve worn over and over look like something new. Who doesn’t love layers like that?

FALL SHOPPING: TRENCH COATS

trench coats

trench coat trench coat trench coat trench coat trench coat trench coat trench coat

It’s always around this time every year that I starting itching for a new season. Don’t get me wrong. I love the simplicity of summer – easy dressing that doesn’t require much effort, just those quick slip-on-and-go kinds of pieces. But around the third week of August, I start   craving a change. I’m ready for a wardrobe switch. The other day I started thinking about the pieces I’m most excited to pull out of storage for fall: my Rag & Bone boots, my cozy knits, and, most of all, my trench coat.

Of all my outerwear, my trench coat is the one piece I come back to year after year. Just like a leather jacket, the trench is one of those eternally cool pieces. It’s been a staple of everyone’s from Jackie O. to Kate Moss. There’s nothing more classic, and it goes with everything. It makes for a perfect transition piece, too, since it’s so lightweight. While I love the look of a no-frills style like this one or this one, I’m also eyeing some of the updated versions, too. There’s this splurge-worthy one with leather sleeves, or – for a more budget-friendly option – this one with contrasting trim. (If you’re looking for a major steal, check out this Target one.) It doesn’t matter which style you choose. You simple cannot go wrong with a trench coat.
