I think Miss Carrie Bradshaw said it perfectly: “It’s a cashmiracle!” When it comes to wardrobe staples, the cashmere sweater is one of the most important. Versatile and chic (not to mention super comfy), a great cashmere sweater will keep you covered year-round – for years to come. With that said, it’s important to choose your cashmere wisely. Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to cashmere:
1. Price: You’re not going to find good cashmere for $20.00. Cheap cashmere is just that – cheap. It will be itchy and it certainly won’t last you for more than one season. With that said, it doesn’t have to break the bank either. There are plenty of places that carry wonderful, classic cashmere sweaters for around $100 – J.Crew and Lands’ End, to name a couple. (Note: Keep your eye out for end-of-season cashmere sales!)
2. Quality: The thicker the knit feels, the denser the gauge, which means there’s more cashmere in it. Put it to the test by gently stretching the sleeve of the sweater to see if it snaps back to shape – a lower quality cashmere sweater won’t.
3. Care: Most people drop their cashmere off at the dry-cleaners, but this isn’t necessarily the best option as the harsh chemicals can shorten the life of your sweater. The best way to care for cashmere is to gently hand-wash it in cold water with baby shampoo. To dry, roll it in a towel (do NOT wring it) to get the moisture out of the fibers and then simply lay it on a flat surface.

I know they say not to judge a book by its cover, but I must make an exception in this case. I have been in love with these Penguin Classics hardcovers for some time now (I actually received one for Christmas last year). How gorgeous are the covers? Not only would they add some glam to any bookshelf, they would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys the classics.

One of my favorite gifts to give (and receive) is a book. Even if the person isn’t an avid reader, a coffee table book is a perfect gift! Whether they’re an art lover or an aspiring designer or a food connoisseur, there’s a book out there that will suit their interest (plus they serve as a decoration for the table!). While I love to know about the latest and greatest in the beauty product world, I’ve never been a dedicated follower of the beauty blogs. That is, until I discovered Into the Gloss, an inside look into the beauty industry written by former Teen Vogue intern Emily Weiss. (For those of you that followed MTV’s The Hills, you’ll remember Emily as none other than “The Super Intern.”) The blog, which just launched a few weeks ago, offers everything from product reviews to street style beauty to interviews with the movers and shakers in the fashion and beauty industry. My personal favorite is the “The Top Shelf” segment in which various insiders reveal their beauty routines and fave products. I mean, really, who doesn’t want to know what Karlie Kloss’ beauty secrets are? Count me in.
The holidays are more than a month away, but this year I’m really going to try to get all of my holiday shopping finished early. Here is the first of several gift guides we’ll be featuring this holiday season. I hope you find it helpful!
